In 1994, U. S. Congress passed The California Desert Protection Act which established 1.6 million acres for the Mojave National Preserve. Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Park were also established.
The 2005 refurbished, 1924 Kelso train depot is the main Visitor Center in Mojave N.P. and a good place for books on local history.
The Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, we took a quick trip to the Visitor Center to look at books. Low and behold, they were closed for “inventory.”
The end of May was hot and we weren’t prepared for exploring much on foot, but we did see a few fun things.
