Welcome to our family friendly website, West Of Las Vegas. We’ve resided in the small desert community of Sandy Valley, Nevada for over twenty years. Sandy Valley lies southwest of Las Vegas by the California border and is surrounded by mountains. The Nevada side falls in the historical Yellow Pine Mining District. The California side of the valley is a healthy wilderness area. The valley floor has groves of mesquite trees, sand dunes and a dry lake bed with gypsum crystals. With all the history, cultural resources, natural beauty, and wildlife, there’s a lot to explore in our little part of the world. We’re looking forward to sharing these features with you.
With some of the issues we came across while spending numerous hours a month exploring, it became apparent communicating with the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro Specialist would benefit the wild ones. Tara entered the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Volunteer Program in April, 2007. David signed up in January, 2008. Between 2008 and 2017, we’ve logged over 4,500 hours of monitoring, observing and documenting. To make documenting the wild ones easier for ourselves, we’ve assigned names to the horses, instead of numbers.
In February, 2016, Tara was appointed by the U.S. Secretary Of The Interior in Washington D.C. to represent the interests of wild horses and burros with the Bureau of Land Management’s Mojave-Southern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council.
Regards, David and Tara
